Golden Knife was created during an internal game jam at SUPERHOT. I was thinking how you can capture the experience of tactical-stealth games such as Commandos or Desperados in a smaller form. I realized that all tactical-stealth games boil down to sequences of logic puzzles. So every level in Golden Knife in its core was just a simple puzzle that you could encounter as a chunk of a level in any tactical-stealth game. It was pretty much the same approach that developers of Hitman GO took to capture the essence of Agent 47 in a mobile environment.

But Hitman games are stealth games not tactical-stealth games - you control only one character. So to imitate the team aspect of the tactical-stealth games I needed to go a step further. I was reluctant to implement any complex turn system, so to keep things simple and clear I took SUPERHOT flagship mechanics ("Time moves only when you move") and added it on top of the Golden Knife. So in the game, every time you move ANY of your characters, time moves.

After the game jam I received very warm feedback and I soon realized that I got a pretty solid game concept in my hands. I was ready to investigate the theme further, which eventually got me working on Janosik: Tactics.
